France, Second Republic (1848–1852).
Model 1845 infantry officer’s sabre, privately made by “Creuzé Proa & Cie in Châtellerault”.
Mountings in gilded cast brass. Short-tailed pommel edged with laurel leaves. Black horn tang with brass filigree. Guard openworked with plant motifs and rosettes. The arch ends in a coiled quillon. Scarlet woolen cord present. Blade with a light grey patina, flat back and hollow edge, marked on the back “Creuzé Proa & Cie à Châtellerault Mai 1848”. Black leather scabbard with three gilt brass fittings and two suspension rings. In the condition found, never previously in a collection.
91.5 cm (Blade 77 cm).
(Signs of age and patina, wear and tear, the filigree on the hilt is damaged and missing, the leather of the scabbard is torn beneath the cap with small gaps; in fairly good condition).
