Description
France, Second Empire (1852–1870) – Third Republic (1870–1940). Privately made Model 1816 foot-mounted artillery sabre for sailors in the Royal Navy, without a scabbard. All fittings are mercury-gilded; the one-piece cast brass hilt has eighteen scales with three steel rivets. The pommel is smooth (the motif that originally adorned the pommel has been worn away). Straight crossguard with a smooth, undecorated back, bearing two serial numbers, one of which is crossed out, and the other ‘4697’ on one side, and stamped with an anchor with rounded arms on the other side. Hilt missing. 1816 model sword blade, grey with rust spots and traces of rust bloom, with two small hollows near the hilt and a long hollow towards the point, maker’s marks at the hilt “N & B & CX” on one side and stamped “PC” beneath a star (?) partially legible on the other side. 64 cm (blade 48.5 cm). (Signs of wear and minor accidents of use, not common, fairly good condition).
