Description
Kingdom of Savoy, mid-19th century.
A rare Savoyard fireman’s sword.
Based on the small 1831 French model (known as the ‘lightened 1855 model’). Hilt in cast brass with sixteen flutes. Crossguard stamped with the Cross of Savoy in the centre on both sides, and finished with quillons decorated with perforated rings. Blade with a mottled grey patina, double-edged and double-grooved with a central ridge, without maker’s mark or hallmark. Blackened leather scabbard with a central dorsal seam and two brass fittings; the pommel has an oval-shaped button.
66.5 cm (blade 53 cm).
(Signs of wear and tear, play between the blade tang and the mountings, the scabbard seam is open and the tip is missing; in fairly good condition).
