Description
France, Second Empire (1852–1870).
Rare 1831 small-model sabre (lightweight version known as the 1855 model), for the Fire Brigade of the Zornhoff Manufactory in the Bas-Rhin.
Cast brass mount with twenty-six flutes. The crossguard is originally fitted with a locking button for the scabbard chape, and finished with quillons adorned with perforated discs for the Fire Brigade. Blade with a mottled grey patina and traces of oxidation, double-edged with two fuller grooves and a central ridge, bearing the maker’s mark on the heel “Manufacture de Zornhoff Bas Rhin” on one side, without a hallmark. Blackened leather scabbard with a central back seam and two brass fittings; the pommel has an olive-shaped button and a notch allowing the tab of the crossguard button to be locked.
61.5 cm (blade 48.5 cm).
(Signs of wear and tear; the leather of the scabbard is brittle with small areas missing from the surface and the stitching open for a few centimetres; in fairly good condition).
Note: The Zornhoff Manufactory was located in the commune of Monswiller (67700) in the Bas-Rhin department (the villages of Zornhoff and Monswiller merged at the end of the 18th century) and was part of the GOLDENBERG establishment, a tool and hardware factory. Workers from the Klingenthal Manufactory worked in this factory and manufactured sabre and rapier blades under contract for Klingenthal, which they signed ‘Manufacture du Zornhoff’.
