Description
Papal States, second half of the 19th century.
A rare sword belonging to a papal chamberlain, from the Imbert de la Phalecque family.
Steel mountings, flat fluted pommel, crossguard with straight quillons ending in tassels, tang with black horn plates inlaid with finely chiselled steel motifs of plant and floral designs. Scarlet wool tie present. Fine straight blade with a light grey patina, stained in places, of a rhomboidal cross-section with a double edge and a small central groove, without maker’s mark. Black leather scabbard with two steel fittings featuring scalloped edges and decorated with incised lines; the pommel ends in a motif identical to that on the pommel, flat and fluted, and the chape has a long button. Sword in its original condition, never previously in a collection.
91.5 cm (blade 72.5 cm).
(Signs of wear and minor accidents of use; the blade is slightly curved; in good condition).
Note: For illustrative purposes, we have included a photograph taken from the internet showing a papal chamberlain in ceremonial uniform carrying the same sword.
