A privately made 1853-model ‘chiselled’ Naval Officer’s sword, without a scabbard.
Gilded bronze mountings, pommel in the shape of an inverted truncated cone decorated with scallop shells, a joint ring adorned with friezes of oak and laurel leaves, and a central ring decorated with shells, dividing at its base into two small branches. Guard ending in a scallop shell. Tortoiseshell tang with brass filigree. Symmetrical guard stamped with a spread-out anchor surmounted by the imperial crown, resting on four flags, flanked by oak branches on the right and laurel on the left, folding counter-guard of the Manceaux system, stamped with the manufacturer’s logo “FBD with a plumed helmet and sword” in an oval for François Delacour & Backes. Tie missing. Blade with a light grey patina and small spots, diamond-shaped in cross-section, with the maker’s mark near the heel: “Jules Creuzé Entrepreneur à Châtellerault”.
