Description
France, Second Empire (1852–1870). A so-called ‘chiselled’ Navy Officer’s sword, Model 1853, privately made by Alexandre BES, without scabbard. Gilded bronze mount, pommel in the shape of an inverted truncated cone decorated with scallop shells, joint ring adorned with friezes of oak and laurel leaves and a central band decorated with shells, dividing at its base into two small branches. Guard ending in a scallop shell. Brown filigree horn tang. Symmetrical guard stamped with a spread-winged anchor surmounted by the imperial crown, resting on four flags, flanked by oak branches on the right and laurel on the left; folding counter-guard of the Manceaux system, stamped with a manufacturer’s logo “A\B” for Alexandre BES in a cartouche with cut corners. Tie missing. Blade with a light grey patina and small spots, diamond-shaped in cross-section, with a hallmark at the heel “S - H” within an “altère”. 97.5 cm (Blade 82.5 cm). (Normal wear and tear and patina of age, filigree on the tang missing, fairly good condition). Note: Alexandre BES, gunsmith and armourer in Paris from 1835 to 1855, succeeded by Antoine PARANT in 1856.
