France, Second Empire (1852–1870).
A so-called magistrate’s sword.
Fittings in gilded cast brass and burnished steel. Clover-shaped pommel stamped with the imperial eagle, surmounted by a melon-ribbed rivet button. Tangkai decorated alternately with gilded blades and plain burnished steel blades (marcasite). Guard decorated with floral motifs. Guard featuring a cut-out gilded eagle surrounded by plain burnished steel bands (marcasite). The beaded chain linking the pommel to the left crossguard is missing. Three-edged blade, with a light grey patina stained in places, gilded and blued in the lower third (remnants) and chiselled with trophies of arms and floral motifs, bearing the maker’s mark inscribed in gilded cartouches, illegible. Blackened leather scabbard with two gilt and cut brass fittings, engraved with floral motifs; the chape has a long button decorated in the same style.
