Description
France, Second Empire (1852–1870).
A privately made sword for a senior officer or civil dignitary, without a scabbard.
Cast brass mount with fine mercury gilding; pommel decorated with an oval surrounded by small pearls, surmounted by a decorated rivet button. Tangk with mother-of-pearl plates grooved on the sides. The joint arch is decorated with friezes of small pearls and a central beaded oval. Symmetrical hilt with lobed border, stamped with the imperial eagle on thunderbolts flanked by oak and laurel branches. It is hallmarked with the manufacturer’s logo “A\B” for Alexandre BES in a cartouche with cut corners. White three-edged blade, undecorated, with the manufacturer’s mark on the heel: “Coulaux & Cie” on one side, and “Klingenthal” on the other. It comes with the scabbard stud in gilded brass.
