Description
France, Second Empire (1852–1870).
An ambassador’s, diplomat’s or senior civil servant’s sword, without a scabbard.
Silver-plated cast brass mountings, pommel with a chiselled button stamped with the imperial eagle, guard chiselled with oak leaf branches and a central oval bordered with pearls. Tang with mother-of-pearl plates featuring two lateral grooves and a quillon terminating in an acanthus leaf. Symmetrical guard, openwork-cut and chiselled with the imperial eagle perched on a thunderbolt and a small raised counter-guard. Hilt missing. Blade with a light grey patina, stained in places, three-edged and chiselled in the lower third with trophies of arms and bouquets of flowers in blue and gold, no maker’s mark. Sword in the condition in which it was found, never previously in a collection.
