Description
France, Third Republic (1870–1940). Late-period (late 19th century) Model 1831 ‘country-style’ sword, intended for a rural constable or local toll-gate keeper, without a scabbard. Fittings in cast copper-plated brass with sixteen flutes. Crossguard ending in quillons decorated with knobs. Strong, straight blade, with a slight mottled grey patina and minor traces of oxidation, with a hollow edge and flat back, without manufacturer’s mark or hallmark. 73.5 cm (blade 60.5 cm). (Signs of wear and use; an interesting variant of the "country-style" sword; in fairly good condition).
