Naval Academy officer’s sabre, model 1854/70, circa 1880–90.
Gilded bronze mount, cap with a cover decorated with a central medallion, long tail with a scallop shell frieze. Fluted horn grip without filigree. Joint arch with an upper eyelet for the sword strap, decorated with water leaves up to the middle ring. The shell formed by the secondary branch is openwork-chiselled with water leaves and a spread-out anchor. Quillon ending in a dolphin’s head. The underside of the mount is hallmarked “J. BACKES” (?) and “60”. Scarlet wool cord present. Blade with a light grey, rust-speckled patina, hollow-ground and flat-backed with a groove near the back and manufacturer’s mark “Coulaux & Cie Klingenthal France”, corresponding to the markings for the period 1880–1890, and hallmarks on the heel: “C” beneath a star and “B” beneath a star. Blackened leather scabbard with three brass fittings and two suspension rings; the leather is worn. The pommel is flanked by a spread-winged anchor and a scallop shell-shaped rivet button.
