A privately made sword known as the ‘chiselled’ Naval Officer’s model 1872, without a scabbard.
Gilded bronze mountings, pommel in the shape of an inverted truncated cone decorated with scallop shells, guard adorned with friezes of oak and laurel leaves and a central ring decorated with shells, dividing at its base into two small branches. Guard ending in a scallop shell. Black filigree horn tang. Symmetrical guard stamped with a spread-out anchor, set upon four flags, flanked by oak branches on the right and laurel on the left, with a folding counter-guard of the Manceaux type. Scarlet wool tie present. Blade oxidised to a rusty finish, with two grooves, bearing the hallmark ‘V.P.B’ in an oval on the heel.
