Description
France, Third Republic (1870–1940). Service revolver, Model 1874, known as the ‘officers’ model’, manufactured by the St Étienne Arms Factory, 1877. Calibre 11 mm. 6-shot. Serial number "N 17735". All metal parts in their original black patina, worn in places; the hammer, loading door, trigger and ramrod in their original yellowed finish, which is also worn. All parts bear the same serial number. Markings on the barrel: “Mle 1874” and on the frame: “Mre d’Armes de St Étienne”. The barrel is dated “S. 1877” and bears the inspection marks “M” in a circle for the Director of the MAS (General Maignien, 1873–1882) and “J” in a circle for the Chief Inspector. Six-chamber barrel with a common chamber for Model 1870 N and 1873 M cartridges, and a crowned proof mark "E". The right side of the frame is stamped "M" above the stock to indicate a return to the factory for servicing or replacement of parts. Finely checkered walnut grip plates and ring-shaped cap. Functional single and double-action mechanism, with two distinct cocking notches and no play. Clean barrel interior with good rifling. Complete. 24 cm (barrel 11.1 cm). (Signs of wear and patina; revolver cleaned and the bluing stripped bare in places; in good condition).
