Description
France or Belgium, Third Republic (1870–1940). “FAGNUS-MAQUAIRE” centre-fire officer’s revolver, manufacturer unknown (markings have worn away). Cal. 11 mm / 73. 6-shot. Serial no. ???. All metal parts with a white polished finish (traces of the original bronze finish). Fluted, rifled barrel. Hollow-out six-shot cylinder. On the left-hand side, the mechanism cover plate is removable; it is opened using a pedal located on the side. Finely checkered walnut grip plates and a ring-shaped grip cap. Functional single and double-action mechanism, with a crisp cocking notch and no play. Inside of the barrel is dirty (grease) with good rifling. Complete. 23 cm (barrel 11 cm). (Signs of wear and normal use; the gun has been cleaned previously; markings and hallmarks have worn away; in fairly good condition). Note: the “Fagnus” revolver, often mistakenly referred to as the "Maquaire", is a development of the 1874 model officer’s revolver by the Belgian gunsmith Alexandre FAGNUS, inspired by the Chamelot-Delvigne 1873, for which he filed several patents between 1873 and December 1876. In 1887, it was the Parisian gunsmith Amédée MAQUAIRE who presented this revolver to the Standing Committee of Versailles during the tests to replace the 1873 and 1874 model revolvers, and which was ultimately not selected. The Fagnus-Maquaire revolver was manufactured both in France (notably in Saint-Étienne) and in Belgium (Liège). From 1890 onwards, this revolver was offered for sale in the catalogue of the Saint-Étienne arms manufacturer and was thus issued to a large number of reserve officers, serving, in fact, during the Great War.
