Claude VIGNON (Tours 1593 – 1670. Clorinda attempting to set fire to the tower built by the Crusaders. Oil on canvas. Height: 94.5 cm – Width: 85 cm The subject is taken from *Jerusalem Delivered* by Torquato Tasso, known as Le Tasse, published in 1581, Canto XII, lines 41–47: Clorinda, a warrior in the pay of the Muslims, falls in love with Tancred, a Christian knight. Here, she is attempting to set fire to the tower built by the Crusaders, aided by Argan on the right, who is wearing an oriental turban. Our painting is in keeping with the literary and artistic tastes of Parisian high society. It can be dated to the 1630s or the early 1640s, when Claude Vignon was at the height of his career and receiving numerous commissions. The artist’s passion, lyrical verve and theatricality are fully expressed in this elegant dance step and this nocturne illuminated by Bengal fires, full of movement, and a world away from the Atticist style that Le Sueur, La Hyre and Patel were developing at the same time.
