Arnold Boonen was the finest pupil of Gotfried Schalcken, whose studio in Dordrecht he attended between 1683 and
1690. He adopted his master’s subjects of figures illuminated by candlelight, in the refined style
(“fijnschilders”), before devoting himself to a career as a portrait painter after 1700 in Frankfurt, Mainz and
Darmstadt, and later Amsterdam.
Our painting can be compared with *The Hermit Reading*, dated the same year, 1695, and of
very similar dimensions, now in the Herzog Anton Ulrich-Museum in Braunschweig.
