SAÔNE-ET-LOIRE – MÂCON. LAMARTINE, Elisa de, née Mary Ann Elisa Birch (1790–1863), painter and sculptor of British origin, wife of the Romantic poet Alphonse de Lamartine. Signed autograph letter. Paris, 3 March 1856. 2 pp. in-4. The President of the Historic Monuments Commission has asked Madame de Lamartine for the plans of the Mâcon Bridge ‘in order to assess the preparatory work required for the plinths of the proposed statues and the scale at which the statues themselves should be created. I have also been asked to provide some information on the stone that might be quarried [?] in the vicinity of Mâcon, or at least not too far from the town, which could [sic] be used for the statues.
