CHINA – Qianlong period (1736–1795)
A pair of vases in the archaic ‘fanggu’ style, made of gilded bronze and cloisonné enamel, decorated with geometric qilong facing each other amidst clouds against a background of scrollwork and framed by friezes of ruyi heads, leaves, scrollwork and lotus petals, and punctuated by protruding ridges. The foot and neck are chiselled with a frieze of scrollwork. (Bubbles, wear, small chips, missing plaque)

This type of vase is inspired by the forms of archaic ritual bronzes from the Shang and Zhou dynasties and was intended to be placed on the altars of temples and palaces, often as part of a five-piece set known as ‘wugong’. During the reign of Qianlong, the emperor insisted that rituals be conducted in the same manner as during the Shang and Zhou dynasties.
In 1748, he thus reinstated the use of archaic-style tableware in rituals, thereby replacing the porcelain bowls and plates that had been in use since the Ming dynasty. The archaic forms were copied and rendered in cloisonné enamels by the craftsmen based on the *Xiqing gujian*, a catalogue of archaic bronzes from the imperial collections printed under the patronage of Emperor
Qianlong and published between 1749 and 1755.
