Description
Ernest CHAPLET (1835–1909) and Edouard DAMMOUSE (1850–1903) for HAVILAND & Cie. A fine pair of brown stoneware scroll vases with a Japanese-style floral design accented in black and gold. One vase is signed with an intaglio rosary mark on the foot and ‘H&C°’ and ‘E.D’ on the body. Numbered 77 R,B,22. Bear a label from the ‘Escalier de Cristal’ beneath the plinth. Height with plinth: 59 cm – Height without plinth: 56 cm – Diameter: 23.5 cm A vase not attached to its plinth. Between 1882 and 1885, Chaplet produced a remarkable series of brown stoneware pieces for Charles Haviland, marking a decisive turning point in the history of ceramics. A true pioneer of the artistic revival that swept through France during the last quarter of the 19th century, he surrounded himself with renowned artists such as Hexamer, Ringel d’Illzach and Édouard Dammouse, to whom we owe the Japanese-inspired motifs characteristic of some of Chaplet’s work. The Petit Palais and the Musée d’Orsay now hold significant collections of his works, including several vases similar to the pair we are offering for sale.
