A portable diptych solar and lunar dial made of elephant ivory (Elephas maximus, Loxodonta africana or Loxodonta cyclotis), engraved and inked, consisting of two panels joined by two metal-wire hinges. The outer upper surface is engraved with a serrated frieze and four stylised tulips surrounding an equinoctial dial graduated ‘I-XII-I-XII’, centred on a polar dial graduated ‘VIII-XII-IIII’. Charles BLOUD. The inside of the lid is also engraved with a serrated frieze, centred on a three-disc lunar dial, bearing the rule of latitudes graduated from 0 to 80. Lower plate with a wire-axle (fixed) engraved with an azimuthal dial graduated ‘V-XII-VII’ surrounding a tin compass with an analemmatic dial graduated “VII-XII-V” and a printed paper background featuring a compass rose alternating the names and latitudes of fourteen European cities (Lyon, Brussels, London, La Rochelle, Dieppe, etc.). The outer face is centred on a perpetual calendar dial bearing the inscription: ‘Made by Charles Bloud, Dieppe’. Charles Bloud (c. 1640–after 1686), master craftsman and ivory turner, (quadrant maker from 1670 to 1686). The gnomon is missing; there are restorations and old longitudinal cracks.
