Cunon of Falkenstein was born around 1320 and died on 21 May 1388. He was Archbishop of Trier from 1362 to 1388 and administrator of the vacant see of Cologne. In his day, he was the wealthiest prelate in the Holy Roman Empire.
He was the son of Philip IV, Lord of Falkenstein, and of Joan, daughter of the Count of Sarrewerden. Like his brother John, he served as a canon of Mainz (1325), schoolmaster (1345) and provost of the chapter (1348) of St Martin’s Cathedral in Mainz. Henry III of Virnebourg, Archbishop of that cathedral, employed him extensively in the affairs of his diocese, and he played a leading role in everything that took place there under that prelate. It is said that when Emperor Charles IV came to Mainz in 1359, he complained to the papal legates about the scant attention being paid to reforming the conduct of the clergy. He cited as an example Cunon of Falkenstein, who was present and whose habit—especially the hood—was adorned with gold pieces and silk bands of various colours. He had this garment brought to him and asked those present: ‘What do you make of this? To whom does this befit better, a clergyman or a gentleman and a knight?’ Then, turning towards the Archbishop, he ordered him to reform the conduct and extravagance of his clergy. Bohémond, Archbishop of Trier, in order to command respect and to curb the ambitions of the nobility, appointed Cunon as his coadjutor, as he was of noble birth, possessed proven experience in the conduct of affairs, and was capable of the most serious undertakings in matters of war.
