Bruno Caruso (1927–2018) was a leading 20th-century Sicilian painter, draughtsman, printmaker and writer.
Created in the mid-1950s (around 1955–1957), this scene is firmly rooted in the Italian Neorealist period.
Founded in Rome in the 1950s, Il Torcoliere (which means ‘the wine press’ in Italian) was not merely a gallery. It was one of Italy’s most prestigious printmaking workshops and art publishing centres.
It was precisely here that Bruno Caruso collaborated to produce his most famous portfolios of Neorealist engravings in the mid-1950s (notably his 1955 series).
