George Arnold, a member of the Royal British Society active between the 1880s and 1920s. “The Towing of the SS OLDFIELD GRANGE in the North Atlantic”, watercolour on paper, signed lower right and dated 1913 83 x 146 cm overall dimensions The SS OLDFIELD GRANGE was a British merchant steamer which was torpedoed and sunk in December 1917 by a German submarine (U-62) off the coast of Ireland The year 1913: The fact that the painting is dated 1913 corresponds exactly to the year the ship was launched and built by Irvine’s Shipbuilding & Dry Docks Co. in West Hartlepool. It was customary at that time for shipping companies or captains to commission an official portrait of the ship in the year it entered service.
