Description
BABANKI, Grassland Cameroon.
Hardwood with a patina of use attesting to its use.
Royal stool used by the Fo'o (king) for important journeys. It consists of two circular trays forming the seat and base, separated by three leopards straddled by figures. This stool is part of the regalia of royalty and as such has been handed down from father to son. The king's totem leopard is the most important royal symbol, embodying the qualities of a good king (power, cunning, speed, survival and aggression).
The tray is engraved with figures of dancers, griots and Tchinda (the king's servants) with the mygale, the royal symbol, at the centre, embodying the person of the king at the centre of everything.
First third 20th century or earlier.
50.5x41.5 cm.
