Description
BAKONGO, Democratic Republic of Congo.
Copper alloy, brown-green patina.
The first Kongo kings were officially converted by the Portuguese in the 16th century, and in the centuries that followed, Christianity spread, incorporating a syncretism of local rites.
This "Nkangi Kiditu" crucifix, a relic from this period of Christianity, depicts a Christ on the cross with African features.
The crucifix was kept by the Mfumu chief and given to his successor during a ritual.
