Description
BAKONGO, Democratic Republic of Congo. Copper alloy, brown-green patina. The first Kongo kings were officially converted by the Portuguese in the 16th century, and in the centuries that followed, Christianity spread, incorporating a syncretism of local rites. This "Nkangi Kiditu" crucifix, a relic from this period of Christianity, depicts a Christ on the cross with African features. The crucifix was kept by the Mfumu chief and given to his successor during a ritual. 24.5x16.5 cm.
