Description
JAPAN, late 16th–early 17th century. Rectangular lacquer cabinet, commissioned for the Portuguese market, in gold hiramaki-e, inlaid with mother-of-pearl and shagreen on a black ground. The interior comprises eighteen drawers of varying sizes arranged around a central drawer of architectural design, decorated with birds, flowers and pine trees. The exterior is adorned, on the top, with a lobed cartouche depicting fish leaping from the waves and, on the sides, with flowering branches. The borders are embellished with stylised foliage and geometric motifs. Hinges and handles in gilded copper. Rear legs. 127.5 x 92.5 x 56.5 cm.
