A symbolic evocation of an ancestor whom she honours, this ‘Mbulu Ngulu’ reliquary guardian figure consists of a wooden core traditionally covered with thin sheets of brass and copper.
The power of this work lies in the radical abstraction of the human figure embodied by this Mbulu Ngulu and the age-old oxidation of the metal sheets, resulting from the ritual libations and offerings received to strengthen the bond with the ancestors and attract their favour.
