This ‘Mbulu Ngulu’ reliquary guardian figure is distinguished by its architectural construction, based on a subtle balance of volumes and lines; the crescent-shaped headdress and the lateral projections are characteristic of the Obamba sub-group.
The oval-shaped face is punctuated by copper strips arranged horizontally with great regularity. The almond-shaped, elongated eyes, the straight nose and the absence of a mouth lend the face a contemplative and introspective expression.
In its lower part, the figure rests on an openwork diamond-shaped structure which formed the connection to the bark container holding the bones. This connection between the figure and the reliquary box emphasises its role as guardian of the relics and mediator between the world of the ancestors and that of the living.
