A ritual throwing knife known as an ‘Osélé’ or ‘Musélé’, whose blackened blade, shaped like a bird’s head, is pierced with a triangle representing the eye and features chiselled carvings on one of its two sides.
This prestige weapon was reserved for initiates of the ‘Mungala’ society, who use it during ceremonial dances.
Late 19th century, early 20th century.

(The tang is missing; the blade was formerly coated with a protective wax).
