A wooden ‘Butti’ fetish statue depicting a standing male figure, exhibiting the characteristic features of the Teke ethnic group: legs slightly bent, arms held close to the body at right angles, an abdominal cavity designed to hold the bilongo (magical charge), a scarred face, a trapezoidal beard and the double headdress comprising the ‘mwu’ (crown-shaped) and ‘mupani’ (crest-shaped).
Taken as a whole, these features lend the figure a presence that is both understated and solemn.
