Description
GOURO BETE, Côte d’Ivoire.
Hardwood, black patina, plant fibres.
A rare mask depicting a human face, combining with remarkable intensity the formal simplicity of Gouro masks and the expressive power of Bété masks.
The face is set within a narrow form, dominated by a rounded forehead, marked by a straight central ridge that flows naturally into a prominent nose. The almost closed eyes emphasise the introspective nature of the depiction, whilst the dark surface, weathered by time, lends the whole a powerful presence.
First third of the 20th century.
27 x 14.5 cm.
