Description
KANAK, New Caledonia.
Wood stained black in places,
Two long spears with smooth points, of the ‘jado’ type, featuring a finely carved male face in high relief in the central section. This male face, carved according to the exacting standards of Kanak culture, evokes the ‘Apuema’ mourner’s mask.
The figure-adorned spears were used during the ‘jado’ ceremony, in which the maternal uncles expressed their anger at the loss of their nephew. They destroyed everything in their path, hurled the spear at the deceased’s hut, and shattered the ridgepole. On this occasion, the women would cut off their earlobes.
19th century.
Respective lengths: 190 and 210 cm.
(wear to the tips).
