Description
A fine Debrecen-style meerschaum pipe with a 950-thousandths silver mount, openwork with interlacing patterns and fine rows of pearls; the lid handle is fruit-shaped and the small stem is adorned with foliage. The ebony shank is adorned with fillets and minute ivory discs; the turned end has a profile which, when viewed in raking light, casts a shadow evoking an anamorphic silhouette; the articulated stem is made of bone or shark vertebrae. Master silversmiths: Bernard ADOUR & Jacques-Dominique GAUTIER. Work from the Rhône department, of Austro-Germanic inspiration, early 19th century. First cock hallmark within a double-beveled oval and number 1 (1803–1809). Medium guarantee hallmark number 80. 64 x 7 x 17 cm. (restorations and a small crack in the sea foam). Note: This pipe is interesting for several reasons. Firstly, the anamorphic profile on the shank of our pipe can be compared to the so-called ‘seditious’ pipes that appeared during the Revolutionary period. However, no identical pipes have been found. Secondly, the silver mount clearly reveals the hallmarks, which attribute the pipe’s manufacture to the silversmiths ADOUR and GAUTIER, who are recorded in the Tarbes and Bagnères-de-Bigorre, whilst the hallmark bearing the number 80 corresponds to the Lyon region. Finally, the pipe type itself, known as a ‘Debrecen’, is of Hungarian or, more generally, Germanic origin. We are therefore dealing with a curious object that purports to be of Central European origin, produced by silversmiths from the Tarbes region, inspected by a hallmark office in the Rhône region, and which conceals a seditious message.
