Southern German school, late 15th–early 16th century, in the tradition of the Nuremberg workshops.
Saint James the Greater and Saint Margaret of Antioch.
Painted and cut vellum decorated with foliage and flowers, likely used as a template or model in the art of glass painting.
21 x 17 cm.
(Signs of wear, minor losses and discolouration of the polychromy, distortion and traces of use associated with its presumed function as a template).
Note: An interesting illustrated sheet depicting Saint James the Greater and Saint Margaret of Antioch, the latter recognisable by the cross and the dragon she is subduing. The composition is set within a rich damascene-style plant motif. The support features numerous cut-outs affecting both the figurative elements and the ornamental decoration and the inscription, suggesting that it was likely used as a template, pattern or stencil for transferring all or part of the composition. The style of the figures, the treatment of the decoration and the background motifs can be linked to southern Germanic production of the late 15th and early 16th centuries, particularly within the Nuremberg tradition of glass painting. The hypothesis of a connection with a glass-painting workshop is therefore particularly interesting, although it cannot be confirmed based on current knowledge.
