Pierre Édouard FRÈRE (1819–1886). Young peasant girl sitting in the woods. Oil on canvas, signed and dated (18)75 in the lower left-hand corner, with ‘Chateldon’ written in pencil and dated 1875 again on the reverse. 32.5 x 25 cm. (minor restoration). Note: Pierre Édouard FRÈRE was a French painter, engraver and lithographer of the École d’Écouen. He specialised in genre scenes of everyday life depicting children from rural backgrounds, which were particularly popular in the Anglo-Saxon countries. He is credited with founding the Écouen painters’ colony. He was the younger brother of the Orientalist painter Charles-Théodore FRÈRE (1814–1888).
