Description
Attributed to Isaak SOREAU (1604–c. 1640). Basket of grapes, cherries, strawberries and a rose. Parquet-style oak panel. 51 x 71 cm. (restored). Note: Comparable to a very similar composition by Soreau held in a private collection (see G. Bott, ‘Ein stück von allerlei blumenwerk, ein stück von Früchten, zwei stück auf Tuch mit Hecht: die Stillebenmaler Soreau, Binoit, Codino und Marrell in Hanau und Frankfurt 1600–1650, Hanau, 2001, no. IS.42, reproduced). Isaak Soreau is thought to be the son of the Frankfurt painter Daniel Soreau, and the brother of Pieter Soreau. Initially a pupil of his father until 1619, then of Sébastien Stoskopff, Isaak Soreau was a German painter specialising in still lifes, often depicting baskets of fruit. Given the numerous similarities between his work and that of Jacob van Hulsdonck, Soreau likely worked within the latter’s circle, perhaps in his studio. Expert: René MILLET
