Description
Auguste Marie BARREAU (?–1922).
Dido, or Hope Dashed.
Patinated bronze sculpture, signed on the base and bearing the inscriptions ‘Gold Medal, 1866 Exhibition of Fine Arts’ and ‘Purchased by the State’ on the sides.
59 x 18 x 15 cm.
Note: Dido was the founding queen of the city of Carthage. The moment captured by the sculptor is one of despair and romantic disappointment (hence the alternative title *Disappointed Hope*). Indeed, she was abandoned by the Trojan hero Aeneas on Jupiter’s orders, whilst she was madly in love with him.
