Description
POST (20th century). The Soup. A large patinated bronze sculpture, signed on the rockwork and bearing the foundry mark ‘LAUCHHAMMER BILDGUS’ on the reverse side at the base. 46.5 x 24 x 24 cm. Note: The marking ‘LAUCHHAMMER BILDGUSS’ refers to the prestigious German art foundry Kunstgießerei Lauchhammer (sometimes known as Lauchhammer Kunstguss). Founded in 1725 in Brandenburg by Baroness Benedicta Margareta von Löwendal, it is one of the oldest and most famous art foundries in Europe. The German word ‘Bildguss’ literally means ‘art casting’ (or the casting of sculptures/statues), as opposed to industrial casting or bell casting, which they also practised.
