Description
A large clock in patinated and gilded bronze and red ‘griotte’ marble, depicting a woman reading whilst standing, leaning on a shaft within which is set a marble dial with Roman numeral hour markers applied to the surface. Richly decorated with stylised godrons, ribbon bows holding medallions with classical profiles, laurel wreaths and volutes. The oval base, with stepped and moulded edges, is highlighted by ribbon mouldings and a frieze of ovals, and centred by a radiating mascaron. The whole rests on four spindle-shaped feet at the corners and two feet with foliage-decorated volutes at the ends. The movement is signed ‘LEMERLE CHARPENTIER, Bronze Maker in Paris’ and numbered 302.
With key, hallmark and balance wheel.
