Description
Narcisse Virgile DIAZ DE LA PENA (1807–1876)
“Old Ben-Emeck Offering Advice”, oil on canvas, unsigned
Dimensions: 21.5 x 16.2 cm
In March 1838, Diaz exhibited a painting entitled “Old Ben-Emeck recounts to his wives the adventures of his past life as a pirate” at the Salon, held at the Musée Royal in Paris. The work was a great success, and the theme was revisited to fulfil commissions from wealthy art collectors. Here, Diaz introduces dogs and a child into his composition, which distinguishes this painting from the variants we are familiar with. Mr Michael Klaa informs us that, according to Pierre Miquel, this work belongs to the painter’s early period (from 1834 to 1844). Mr Michael Klaa also informs us that this painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the artist, currently being prepared by Rolande Miquel and Michael Klaa.
We would like to thank Mr Michael Klaa for this information.
