Description
A set of 168 breast badges, known as ‘pucelles’, made of brass-plated, silver-plated and enamelled metal. This collection is notable for its focus on medical services. It includes a substantial series dedicated to the Health and Medical Rescue Service (SSSM), featuring the caduceus symbols of the various specialities: doctors, pharmacists, nurses and vets. The collection is notable for a very fine and comprehensive set of French Red Cross (CRF) badges, incorporating vintage pieces and covering the various ranks of first-aid workers. There is also a fine vintage Saint-Quentin badge, as well as a wide range of variations on the traditional national federation badge (tricolour shield). Overall in good condition, with normal signs of wear and tear. Many badges are glued to their backing.
Provenance: The Albert Giraud Collection, considered to be the largest collection of fire service badges in France (formerly housed in the museum at Saint-Vincent-sur-Graon).
