Description
National Guard fur-lined cap badge (probably from Bordeaux). Constitutional Monarchy period (1789–1792). Curved die-struck brass badge. The central motif features a sword surmounted by a Phrygian cap crowned with stars, separating two oval shields: on the left, the arms of France with three fleurs-de-lis beneath a royal crown; on the right, the coat of arms. The whole is dominated by the motto ‘VIVRE LIBRE OU MOURIR’ (‘LIVE FREE OR DIE’) and rests upon numerous weapons, including cannons, cannonballs, drums, flags and the hand of justice, set within a frame of oak and laurel branches. Dimensions: 15.5 x 21 x 5 cm. Condition: signs of wear, patina of age, original fixing holes.
