Description
A rare brass telescope made by Thomas MORTON, Kilmarnock (Scotland), circa 1860. It rests on a mahogany tripod base carved with foliage and fitted with castors. The brass tube is supported by two pillars on a turntable; altitude adjustment is via an arched rack and pinion mechanism, whilst external focusing is achieved via a long rod (the tip of one foot and two brass caps are missing) Maximum height: approx. 188 cm. Telescope length: 108 cm. Telescope diameter: 19 cm. Thomas MORTON (1783–1862), an engineer from Kilmarnock (Scotland), produced telescopes, of which around ten survive today; this one is of exceptional size Provenance: ARTCURIAL auction of 23 September 2025: La Malouinière du BOS, a French passion, lot no. 181, sold for €28,964 including fees (lot not paid for by the successful bidder) Sale following a re-auction
