Den Uyl was one of the great masters of the Dutch Golden Age. He excelled in the art of still life and breakfast scenes. Much sought-after during his lifetime, his contemporary Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) is said to have owned three of them.
Characteristic of 17th-century Dutch still lifes, our painting uses all the codes: the crab, oysters, fruit and utensils denote vanities, often interpreted as judgments or warnings about life.
