Description
François EISEN (1695-1778/98) attributed to
Children playing with stilts
Oil on canvas signed lower right in the tree "F EISEN 1764".
24.5 x 33 cm
Wear, remains of old varnish, repainted.
In an antique giltwood frame
Our painting is based on a composition by François Eisen, also signed and dated 1764 and known from the black and white photograph of the May 1979 exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. This composition, of similar format (H_23.5 cm x W_32 cm), shows children trying their hand at stilt-walking, then very fashionable in the XVIIIᵉ century at fairs.
On the back, a wax seal depicting a coat of arms with three hunting horns, the mouthpieces dextrous, tells us of an old, unidentified provenance. As many families of the French nobility bore this coat of arms, it is complicated to determine exactly who owned it; it may have been the de Nesmond or Cornet family.
