Description
Persian ceramic with "grain of rice" decoration
Siliceous paste with black, cobalt and aubergine painted decoration under a transparent colourless glaze
Iran, 19th century
Height: 10.5cm, diameter: 22.2 cm
The "grain of rice" decoration includes openwork areas (filled in by the transparent glaze), a rare technique in the Persian world, directly inspired by Chinese ceramics.
It also features polychrome painted decoration of floral motifs, garlands and geometric friezes.
A comparable bowl with calligraphic decoration is in the Louvre (AD10535) and published in
the exhibition catalogue L'Empire des Roses, Chefs-d'œuvre de l'art persan du XIXe siècle, dir. Fellinger G., 28 Mar. - 23 July 2018, Snoeck / Louvre Lens, n°308, p. 316.
(It is dated 1223 h. / 1808-1809 and features calligraphic decoration).
