Description
[HERBARIUM] An exceptional composite herbarium of France (it appears to have been compiled from two sources; one covering the Île-de-France region, the other the Auvergne region) from the late 19th century (1886–1906), admirably compiled from some 2,700 plates arranged and bound into 52 folio-sized folders (numbered 1 to 52) housed in a specialist cabinet (early 20th century) opening via a belt-pull drawer specially designed for this unique collection. Each folder is half-clothed in black (some grey) with cardboard covers (plain, unmarked spine) and fastened with a simple knotted string. Green sheets indicate the family names (handwritten labels accompanied by a classification number on the front cover; here from 1 to 161), whilst plain mauve sheets are inserted (presumably to demarcate the subfamilies) Each plate is inserted into a plain white protective sheet (full-size rag paper); the latter is sometimes simply labelled with the name of the plant in question (handwritten name). Most plates are briefly labelled with the location and date of collection. Sheet 33 is missing (we go directly from folio no. 32 to no. 34; from the Daturaceae no. 91 to the Orobanchaceae no. 97), which indicates that the cabinet comprising 52 compartments was created at a later date; the collection originally comprised 53 folios. As is often the case, some plates show signs of damage from wood-boring insects; nevertheless, this is a rare and unique collection in a very satisfactory state of preservation, having been handled very little and well protected since its creation
