Description
[HERBARIUM] Alphonse BRUNET, schoolteacher ‘A collection of plants from the region for use in the teaching of botany and agriculture’. Herbarium compiled around 1887 by Alphonse François Vincent Brunet (La Mesnière Primary School in the Orne) in loose sheets (approximately 230 plates arranged in alphabetical order) bound in three hardback folio folders with ties (handwritten labels affixed to the front covers). Each folio consists of several soft folders organised by botanical family (with a handwritten label on the front cover), each containing labelled plates; each plate has a handwritten label indicating the family, the name, the provenance (location and sometimes the date of collection) and a description (characteristics). A handwritten sheet (explaining the educational purpose and general layout of this herbarium) is pasted onto the back of the front cover of the first folio. Two additional labels indicate the awards received: "Prize: Bronze Medal, Paris 1889" [and] "Gold Medal Diploma, Exhibition of the Philomathic Society, Bordeaux 1895". The spines of some of the loose-leaf folders are gnawed (without damage to the plates and not serious), insect damage (as usual) to some plates, a few small marginal losses; otherwise the volume is in good condition.
