Lucille TEROUANNE (1924–2012) Enrubanné Oil on canvas signed lower left and dated 98 Dimensions: 55 x 46 cm, with frame: 62 x 53 cm from the “Wizard of Oz” series exhibited in February 2000 at Galerie Selmersheim, 75003 PARIS BIOGRAPHY: Lucille TÉROUANNE was born in New York in 1924. After completing her studies, she took art history courses at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, then attended the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and became a pupil of the New York painter Joseph FLOCH. She was then hired by Tina LESSER to design fashion accessories. She subsequently worked as Howard BAY’s assistant on the sets and costumes for his plays (Show Boat II, Up in Central Park, Marinka, Deep are the Roots...). During the war, she designed costumes for the United States Overseas Organisation for shows staged for the American army in Europe: *Some Like It Cold*, *Porgy and Bess*, *Ship Ahoy*, *The Student Prince*, *Peter Pan*, *Emperor Jones*…; as well as those for the Ringling Bros. – Barnum & Bailey Circus at Madison Square Garden in New York. She then worked as an advertising designer for ‘Chesterfield’ cigarettes. It was then that she decided to devote herself exclusively to painting and sculpture. After a year travelling in Europe, she settled in France and, following the death of her husband, the famous harmonica player Borah MINEVITCH, opened a renowned and very chic private restaurant-club, the “FRANPINOT”, on the Île Saint-Louis. She later returned to New York to exhibit at the Ward Eggleton Gallery, where she enjoyed great success. Having since remarried the film producer Alain TÉROUANNE, she settled permanently in France, where she paints, sculpts and designs jewellery.
